The meaning behind the name

Towela/[Toe-well-a]: derives from the Zambian language, Tumbuka, and means beautiful.

About the Brand

Towela Designs is an independent fashion brand, founded by me, Mwiza Gondwe, a British knitwear designer based in Manchester.

“Towela” has a personal meaning to me and where I’m from, and I wanted to incorporate that part of my heritage into the brand.

My designs are created with longevity in mind.

From construction to material choice, each item is made to be worn often, cared for, and kept—rather than replaced.

Where possible, I use synthetic fibres that are AZO-free and certified to OEKO-TEX® standards, along with natural fibres and recycled yarns.

My hope with this platform is to create eclectic handmade pieces, using various fibres and textures to construct knitted garments and accessories that lean into both minimalism and maximalism.
