Hello,

Welcome to my blog.

My name is Mwiza, and I am the owner of Towela Designs, and based in the U.K.

This is a personal blog where I like to talk about my knitting projects, recent yarn hauls, sewing projects and share tips on running a small business and blogging.

I sell digital knitting patterns and hand knitted items on this website, here, and also on my Etsy shop, here. I also sell other gifted items including printed mugs. Eventually, I’d like to expand my shop and create a sustainable slow fashion brand and include sewn clothing.

The meaning behind the name

Towela/[Toe-well-a]: derives from the Zambian language, Tumbuka, and means beautiful.

“Towela” has a personal meaning to me and where I’m from, and I wanted to incorporate that label into my brand.

My knitting/Sewing Background

I have been sewing a lot longer than I’ve been a knitter.

I first learnt how to use the sewing machine during my Textiles class in secondary school, and have been sewing since.

This is still just a hobby for me. I’m not a professional seamstress by any means, but maybe one day that will change.

As for knitting, it’s been a hobby that I’ve wanted to practice for a long time. I was taught how to knit at a very early age at an after school club, but I kept on making mistakes, and I wasn’t very good, so I left it alone.

Fast forward several years later (pre-pandemic), I made the impulsive choice to buy a pair of knitting needles and a ball of yarn, and then one year later, I finally started using them during the pandemic.
And now I greatly enjoy the peace it brings me. Read my latest post here.
